World of Cochin heralds start of Creative Arts exhibition season
29 Feb 2008 | Bernie Goldie
The Faculty of Creative Arts this week launched an exhibition of traditional folk art of Taiwan to herald in its 2008 exhibition season.
It is the first solo exhibition for PhD candidate, Huei-Mei Shih, now on show at the FCA Gallery. The free exhibition was officially opened by Professor Diana Wood Conroy and it will remain open until March 14.
On show is the delicate and fragile ceramic art form called Cochin which has been used to decorate temples and luxury buildings in Taiwan for more than 200 years. Most of the traditional Cochin craftsmen worked modestly throughout their lives to complete their exquisite works anonymously.
In an exploration of traditional ceramic artworks through painting and photographic imagery, Huei-Mei Shih pays tribute to their skills, imagination and storytelling legacy to Taiwanese culture.
Born in Taiwan, Huei-Mei completed her Master of Arts/Master of Fine Arts double degree at Fontbonne University in the United States. She has held solo exhibitions in the US and has participated in several group exhibitions in Taiwan.
Before joining the Faculty of Creative Arts to undertake her PhD in Visual Arts, she was a researcher with the National Museum of History and lectured at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and National Taiwan University of Arts.
