The University of Wollongong will be well represented at the forthcoming 2020 Youth Summit and Australia 2020 Summit to be held in Canberra.
Three current students and a former UOW student will be putting their views forward at the 2020 Youth Summit this weekend (12 and 13 April) which is being held in advance of the Australia 2020 Summit on 19-20 April.
UOW’s representatives taking part in the Australia 2020 Summit (which involves 1,000 participants) are Professor Lesley Head from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Professor Sam Bateman, from the National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) within the Faculty of Law.
Professor Bateman will be involved in the topic “Australia’s Future Security and Prosperity in a Rapidly Changing Region and World” while Professor Head will be involved in “Population, Sustainability, Climate Change and Water”.
The Youth Summit representatives are Bachelor of Arts Dean’s Scholar and Weerona College resident, Matt Moffitt; Bachelor of Primary Teaching student, David Wassink; Bachelor of Commerce student, Amanda Scott; and former UOW student, Shona Cools.
They are among 100 young people (aged 15 to 24) selected to attend. They will be split into groups of 20 and the same group will examine two topics.
Matt is majoring in Politics and Economics at UOW and he will be participating in the topics of “Australia’s Governance” and “Australia’s Future in the World”. Matt is the President of the UOW Oxfam Group.
David’s two topics will focus on “Communities and Families” and “Indigenous Australia”. David’s name was put forward by the Southern Youth and Family Services Board which he is on as the young people’s representative.
Amanda’s interests lay in the future health care system and youth representation in the future.
Amanda is the Chairperson of the NSW Youth Advisory Council and Surf Life Saving Australia Development Officer.
Former UOW Arts/Law student, Shona Cools, is keen to address issues of poverty and to improve educational opportunities for Indigenous Australians. She is now undertaking her Master of International and Community Development through Deakin University.
