18 Apr 2008 | Bernie Goldie
A conference examining the idea of ‘community unionism’ which considered how unions relate to, and are part of their communities, was held at the University of Wollongong today (Friday 18 April).
The “Community Unionism, Labour’s Future” conference brought together historians, sociologists, trade union and community activists to discuss the future of the labour movement.
Members of the public were welcome to join in the conference which was sponsored by the Gramsci Society (Asia-Pacific), the South Coast Labour Council, the Illawarra Branch of the Australian Labour History Society and the Faculty of Arts at the University of Wollongong.
The Dean of UOW’s Faculty of Arts, Professor Andrew Wells, welcomed participants followed by a presentation from the Secretary of the South Coast Labour Council, Arthur Rorris, on the topic, “Future Directions for Community Unionism”.
Further presentations continued on the theme of ‘community unionism’.
Following today’s conference, papers will be published in a special issue of Illawarra Unity, the Journal of the Illawarra Branch of the Australian Labour History Society.
