One-stop data source to help map UOW’s future direction

23 Apr 2008 | Bernie Goldie

The University of Wollongong, like all universities, is awash with data.

Prospective students submit entry applications, administration run payroll, faculties enter assessment results and then there’s all the grants information for academics.

With source systems overflowing with information, the need to streamline data has become increasingly necessary.

That’s where the Performance Indicators Project (PIP) team comes into the picture.

The team, located in Building 113 in Northfields Avenue opposite the main campus, is nearing the completion of its task to provide staff members with access to all UOW source system data in one easy location. UOW embarked on this project 18 months ago and is expected to be completed by the middle of this year.

The PIP team (formerly known as the Cognos team) exists to manage and provide accessible and integrated reporting and analysis solutions through the secure, web-based Performance Indicator Portal.

It collects and leverages critical data through scorecarding, reporting and analysis capabilities providing staff with a one-stop data source that is needed to achieve a clear picture of day-to-day operations.

Project Director for PIP, Mr Nikita Atkins, said although the Performance Indicators Project gives the University very good historical reporting and a snapshot of how the University was performing “we wanted to do more than just live in the present”.

“We want to provide predictive analytics that will allow the University to analyse key metrics such as student-to-staff ratios and to generally identify the areas that need attention in the near future.

“And our aim has been to deliver all the information to key decision makers in a simple and relevant manner,” Mr Atkins said.

The team has already delivered solutions to various business units within UOW, streamlining their data and reporting processes. This has included solutions for student demographics, student equity, staff workplace and satisfaction, research publications and financial management information.
