Xstrata supports UOW in Nova Scotia

An international exhibition of children’s texts and images organised by UOW’s Faculty of Education was recently staged in Nova Scotia, Canada, with the support of Xstrata Mining.
The exhibition was opened by Alfie MacLeod, MLA, Speaker of the House and Rodger Cuzner, MP. The Voices of Children exhibition was displayed at the Cape Breton University Art Gallery with contributions from 20 students at the Sydney River Elementary School, Nova Scotia.
“Xstrata Coal is committed to making a valuable contribution to the communities in which we operate and is proud to be associated with introducing this global exhibit to Canada and Cape Breton Island,” Project Manager for the Xstrata Coal Donkin Exploration Project, Darren Nicholls, said.
He said it had been a tremendous opportunity for Cape Breton University and the University of Wollongong to collaborate on this exciting project.
Mr Nicholls said that adding the perspectives of children from their own community would offer a special visual and cultural display – one to be enjoyed by people of all ages.
The Voices of Children is an international project in which young people contribute photographic images and words representing their everyday lives. Countries involved are Australia, Samoa, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Zambia and the USA.
Children aged from six to 14 were provided with disposable cameras and asked to capture images of their everyday experiences and provide brief written responses to questions about themselves, their families and their views of the world. Different personal and cultural perspectives were depicted through the use of the images and words generated by the children.
The innovative project was established in 2004 by Dr Pauline Lysaght, Ms Ros Westbrook and Associate Professor Ian Brown from UOW’s Faculty of Education following a successful University Internationalisation Committee International Links grant.
The exhibition has diversified and grown over the years and will include contributions this year from Mexico, Greece, New Zealand and Guatemala. The exhibition is to be displayed in Athens in October supported by Panteion University.
