Three of eight awards offered in NSW from the Chinese Government for “Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad” have gone to the University of Wollongong.
There were 21 awards made in Australia overall with successful candidates given $US5,000 each.
The scholarship is approved by the Ministry of Education in China and administrated by the Chinese Scholarship Council. The award is for Chinese self-financed students under 40 who are studying PhD degree programs abroad and have completed one or more years.
UOW’s successful candidates were Zhengwei Zhao (Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials whose supervisor is Professor Hua Liu); Dapeng Chen (Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials whose supervisor is Associate Professor Xiaolin Wang); and Yong Liu (Intelligent Polymer Research Institute whose supervisor is Professor Gordon Wallace).
The scholarship is open for applicants from 1 September to 31 October every year and the Office of Education of Consulate-General of China in the country is responsible for the assessment of applicants. The Chinese Scholarship Council finalise the awards list.
This was the most successful year for UOW in the allocation of these awards.
In 2005, Yue Zhao won the award and in 2006 Zhenguo Huang was successful.
