Five new Creative Arts prizes a feature of inaugural awards night
2 May 2008 | Bernie Goldie
The Faculty of Creative Arts recently held its inaugural Faculty Awards Night with a crowd of about 80 people attending the presentation of the Dean’s Merit Awards in the McKinnon Building.
It was the first time the event has been held in its own right with 28 recipients representing the top five per cent of students across Creative Arts disciplines, receiving commendation for their achievements in 2007.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement and presentation of five new sponsored prizes, given to students of the faculty.
Winner of the Australian Press Council Prize, donated by the APC, was Mary Prince (Bachelor of Journalism). This prize was awarded for the highest percentage for a single piece of work submitted for an assessment task worth at least 30% of the total subject in a journalism subject.
The Diana Wood Conroy Prize, donated and presented by Professor Diana Wood Conroy, was awarded to Anthony Scerri (Bachelor Creative Arts, Visual Arts). This prize was awarded for the best aggregate mark in third year core theory and studio subjects.
Guest presenter, Julie Simonds from the Fellowship of Australian Composers awarded a prize for Best Composition by a Postgraduate Composer to Dr Daniel Blinkhorn, for Air Masses, which was composed during the course of enrolment for his degree.
She also presented a second award from the Fellowship of Australian Composers for the Best Composition by an Undergraduate Composer, which went to David Kirkpatrick (Bachelor of Creative Arts, Honours), for his piece titled Unite.
The Ignition: NAVA Graduating Student Award, donated by National Association Ltd, and presented by General Manager, Sam Wild, was awarded to Anthony Scerri for achieving the highest average mark in Visual Arts subjects in one year.
Following the presentations, guests were entertained with performances by poetry band, The Bracket Creeps and an audio-visual arrangement by one of the winning composers, David Kirkpatrick.
