UOW hosts visit by delegates of Thailand’s Naresuan University
7 May 2008 | Bernie Goldie
A delegation from Naresuan University, Thailand, met representatives of the University of Wollongong and Illawarra Technology Corporation (ITC) on May 6.
It was the second visit of the President of Naresuan University, Associate Professor Dr Mondhon Sanguansermsri to UOW. He first visited in January 2007.
The objectives of the delegation’s visit were:
• to meet the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton, to thank him for his and the University’s support of Naresuan University staff and institutional development;
• to meet the 13 staff of Naresuan University who are undertaking a seven-week English preparatory program with ITC’s Wollongong College Australia with the possibility of some of these staff members returning back to UOW soon to complete research degrees related to their teaching discipline
The Wollongong College Australia group is the second group undertaking English preparatory programs with the college with the first group of 23 Naresuan University staff members undertaking a similar program in 2007.
And it is also important to note that currently one of Naresuan University’s Vice-Presidents, Associate Professor Charlee Thongruang, is attending English for Tertiary Studies at the college before his planned studies towards a PhD at UOW in the field of Health Service Development.
The delegation also met other senior staff of the University including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Rob Castle; the Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine, Professor Liz Farmer; the Director of Transnational Programs, Mr Bill Damachis; and the Director of the Innovation Campus, Mr David Fuller. The group exchanged ideas and experiences in relation to academic and administrative matters confronting universities.
The delegation also met senior staff from Wollongong College Australia including the Acting General Manager of Operations, Mr Ian Tobin; and Ms Heather Thomas and Ms Trisha McGrellis who have strongly supported both groups of Naresuan University staff in their English language development.
