Management students test their knowledge of real world corporate problems

9 May 2008 | Bernie Goldie

Management students in UOW’s Faculty of Commerce yesterday (May 8) demonstrated their creativity, enthusiasm and knowledge of real world corporate problems when they conducted their 5th biannual poster exhibition.

The exhibition by 430 students is part of the Management 110 subject – ‘Introduction to Management’. The aim of the project is to research and explore contemporary management issues that have attracted national and/or international media attention over the past 10 years.

Key organiser of the display, Dr Mario Fernando, said the poster exhibition is part of a simulation exercise to develop students’ appreciation of the real complexities involved in managing contemporary organisations.

The students, who formed into more than 70 groups, were invited to focus on a range of topics including corporate social responsibility, privacy in the workplace, business ethics, telecommuting, drug testing and critical events such as the Beaconsfield mine disaster and the OK Tedi environmental disaster.

“The group poster project aims to develop an appreciation of the role management and other stakeholders play in developing competitive, productive and rewarding organisations,” Dr Fernando said.

Students were also required to produce an individual reflective essay based on journal entries maintained over the life of their project teams to demonstrate ability to apply management theories to team experiences in creating the group poster. The reflective essay allowed students to critique their individual experiences related to their group’s performance.

Over this week, the exercise will be repeated in the University’s South Coast campuses where local tutors expect equal enthusiasm and quality in students’ work.

Praising the contribution of all those who were involved in the event; Dr Fernando thanked the MGMT110 students and teaching staff at Wollongong and South Coast campuses for their commitment and passion, especially Dr Zeenobiyah Hannif who organised the South Coast campuses and Wollongong head tutor, Wendy Raikes.
