New journalism laboratory opened

University of Wollongong journalism graduates will be at the cutting edge of their profession, Vice-Chancellor Professor Gerard Sutton said at the opening of the new Convergent Journalism Laboratory in the Faculty of Creative Arts.
The laboratory includes a radio studio, computer room and television editing suites designed to help students become proficient at the “new journalism” that will require the next generation of journalists to be able to deliver their stories in a number of different mediums, including on-line podcasts.
UOW’s Bachelor of Journalism degree is now in its second year, with an annual intake of 40 students, although the university has offered a Master of Journalism postgraduate degree since 1990.
The laboratory, which Professor Sutton officially opened on 8 May, is the second major facility created for the Bachelor of Journalism students, after last year’s opening of a print journalism newsroom.
Professor Sutton said School of Journalism and Creative Writing head Associate Professor Stephen Tanner had successfully taken UOW’s Bachelor course in a new direction for Australian journalism programs.
Hands-on facilities such as the newsroom and the new laboratory helped equip the students to move into their chosen profession.
“The ultimate test is what the students will be like when they leave this University, and I am confident they will leave here at the cutting edge of journalism,” Professor Sutton said.
Professor Tanner said the passion of the staff for teaching journalism and the excellent facilities were helping to produce top students who had already won national awards with their magazine, PAPER, ROCK. “Whatever career path they choose, they are going to be very good at it,” Professor Tanner said.
