Book debunks perception of Asia-wide port privatisation
13 May 2008 | Bernie Goldie
As the issue of privatisation hits the headlines lately, a University of Wollongong academic has co-edited a timely book on the topic of port privatisation – the first to take a regional perspective on port reform and port privatisation.
Entitled “Port Privatisation: The Asia-Pacific Experience”, the book has been edited by Dr James Reveley from UOW’s School of Management and Marketing and Associate Professor Malcolm Tull from the Murdoch Business School and Asia Research Centre at Murdoch University.
Contributors to the book include UOW academics – Professor Andrew Wells (Dean of Arts) and Dr Tim Scrase from CAPSTRANS (Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies).
Focusing exclusively on port privatisation in the Asia-Pacific region, the book is aimed at academics and policymakers who are interested in port reform, together with those interested in privatisation more generally in the Asia-Pacific region.
Dr Reveley said that the transformation of public ports into commercially orientated and profitable entities is occurring apace in the Asia-Pacific region.
A range of countries is examined including China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
Dr Reveley said that significantly the book concludes that privatisation of ports is an important, but far from universal approach to reforming the region’s ports.
He said there was a perception by the public that ports were generally privatised throughout the Asian region but this was not really the case.
The book is published through Edward Elgar (EE) Publishing and can be purchased through Marston Book Services Ltd. See www.marston.co.uk
