University of Wollongong pre-service teachers recently celebrated National Mathematics Day by organising a Maths Fair for the students at Nazareth Primary School in Shellharbour.
The 50 pre-service teachers, as part of their mathematics elective class, planned and implemented 21 fun and engaging activities for the 352 students at Nazareth.
The activities were all designed to promote mathematics as a fun and creative pursuit.
“The day was a huge success and a win-win situation all round,” according to Faculty of Education Mathematics Lecturer, Ann Baxter.
“A win for the students, because it provided opportunities for them to enjoy themselves while learning new mathematical concepts and a win for the pre-service teachers because it gave them the opportunity to plan, practise and evaluate their teaching skills.
“And it was also a win for the classroom teachers, who were able to watch and enjoy the fair, while getting some great ideas,” Ann said.
