UOW wins $2.2 million in research grants

2 Jun 2008 | Kate McIlwain

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has announced that UOW will receive around $2.2 million for eight research grants under the Linkage Projects scheme, which is designed to promote links between universities, industry and the community.

Linkage Projects must involve a partner organisation outside the higher education sector and these partners are required to make a significant monetary contribution to the project, in addition to ARC funding.

Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) Professor Lee Astheimer highlighted UOW’s high success rate under this scheme. She said the fact that 57.1% of UOW proposals were accepted compared to the national average of 42.7% was evidence of the important role community partnerships play in UOW’s continued growth in research.

Some of the many partner organisations collaborating with UOW researchers on the Linkage grants include: the Cancer Council, Blue Scope Steel, the Roads & Traffic Authority, the Australian Museum and the Australian Federal Police.

Professor Sandra Jones and her research team from the Centre for Health Initiatives in the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences were doubly successful, with two research projects totalling almost $460,000 of support.

Both projects place a prominent spotlight on youth and community issues with one addressing the topical issue of youth and alcohol with partners in the West Australian Office for Children and Yout, and the other looking at programs to protect teenagers against skin cancer with the Cancer Council NSW.

Researchers Dr Brian Monaghan and Professor Elena Pereloma will be working with Bluescope Steel on two separate projects totalling more than $700,000 of funding. These involve an investigation of reactions between liquids and coke in the ironmaking process to reduce carbon usage, and research into the safe use of hydrogen in high-pressure steel vessels.

Other areas of UOW research funded in this ARC round include the development of next generation Anti-HIV drugs, improvement of technology used to estimate death times in forensic research, the improvement of soft clay to enhance railway line stability, and applying new approaches to multimedia management and retrieval to digital museum collections.

Further information about the Linkage Projects can be found on the ARC’s web site at http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/lp/lp_outcomes.html. To find out more about UOW Linkage Projects go to http://www.uow.edu.au/research/rso/grants/outcomes/index.html.
