New mental health instrument becoming an international success STORI

10 Jun 2008 | Bernie Goldie

The Stages of Recovery Instrument (STORI) developed at the University of Wollongong to measure the psychological recovery process from enduring mental illness is gaining major international interest.

The reliable and valid questionnaire is being translated into Spanish, Japanese, Welsh, French and Cantonese (Hong Kong). Further international interest has been received from England, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Netherlands and Denmark.

STORI was developed by PhD candidate Retta Andresen, supervised by Dr Lindsay Oades and Dr Peter Caputi in the School of Psychology and the Illawarra Institute for Mental Health.

It helps identify which stage of psychological recovery that a person with mental illness is at -- including their level of hopefulness, meaning in life, personal identity and how much they are taking responsibility for their personal health and wellbeing.

Retta’s PhD dissertation recently received excellent reviews from reviewers at Yale University in the US and Kings College, London.

Retta’s first publication was nominated as a Top 10 publication in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry in 2003.

Further research continues to develop shorter versions of STORI and its use as a structured interview to assist interventions for people with enduring mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
