Gosbell’s top honour for power quality achievements

13 Jun 2008 | Kate McIlwain

Professor Victor (Vic) Gosbell from UOW’s Faculty of Informatics has been awarded one of the most prestigious engineering awards in Australia, the MA Sargent Medal.

The Engineers Australia MA Sargent Medal is presented annually to an exceptional Australian electrical engineer who has made significant contributions to the field of Electrical Engineering. It is named after Dr Michael Anthony Sargent, an outstanding electrical engineer.

Professor Gosbell received the award for a ‘remarkably broad national and international career’ in Power Engineering.

Throughout his career, which began in 1961 when he was a cadet at the Sydney County Council, Professor Gosbell became one of a small number of engineers to achieve international recognition for both theoretical and applied contributions to the field.

Professor Gosbell worked at UOW since the early 1990s, when he became an Associate Professor, and was appointed Foundation Professor of Power Engineering in 2001. He is now an Honorary Professorial Fellow at UOW and is currently on leave as a Visiting Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

Dean of Engineering Professor Chris Cook said the award was well deserved and congratulated Professor Gosbell on his achievements.

“Vic’s rigorous understanding and application of the maths and physics behind fundamental engineering phenomena has contributed to his outstanding research, which has made Wollongong the prime Australian university in Electrical Power Quality and Reliability,” Professor Cook said.

“He has been a popular and memorable teacher for several generations of power engineers.”

Although he officially retired in 2005, Professor Gosbell continues his vast contributions to engineering. He currently serves as an Accreditation Visit Specialist for Engineers Australia, an Industry Expert on the Energy Network Association (ENA) Reliability and Power Quality working group, a Technical Advisor for Integral Energy Power Quality and Reliability Centre at UOW and a member of the International Electrotechnical Committee Working Group 08.

Post-retirement he has also been appointed Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Tasmania and continues to have an ongoing role at UOW.

The MA Sargent Medal was presented at a ceremony and dinner held in Melbourne on June 6.
