Government backs Innovation Campus bus service
23 Jun 2008 | Nick Hartgerink
The NSW Government is supporting the University of Wollongong’s new Innovation Campus (iC) with a regular bus service linking the campus with Wollongong’s CBD and railway station.
The service will operate every 30 minutes from 7am-9pm on weekdays and 9am-6pm on weekends.
Announcing the new service, Minister for the Illawarra David Campbell and Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay said the new service would start on Monday, 30 June, following the official opening of the iC Central building on Friday, 27 June.
“This new $500,000 service provided by the Iemma Government will provide a direct link with the retail, office and transport hub of Wollongong,” Mr Campbell said.
Mr Campbell said the Government and the University were committed to maximising the use of public transport to and from the new Innovation Campus.
“More people are choosing to leave their cars at home and are turning to public transport as a cheap and ‘green’ way to travel,” Mr Campbell said. “With the rising cost of petrol and the challenge of climate change, public transport projects like this are more and more important.”
Ms Hay said the service, to be operated by Premier Illawarra, would be an important addition to Wollongong’s transport infrastructure. “The service won’t only benefit (UOW) staff and students, but also local residents and tourists visiting the coastal strip in the North Wollongong beach area,” she said.
Meanwhile, traffic lights at the entrance to the Innovation Campus will be switched on this week. The Government contributed $170,000 to the traffic lights, which have been developed in conjunction with UOW and Wollongong City Council.
