Rotary award caps off a day to remember
30 Jun 2008 | Bernie Goldie
For UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton, working days don’t come much better than Friday 27 June.
First he declared it a “six star day” when NSW Premier Morris Iemma capped the opening of the first building at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus with the announcement of $15 million in funding for the new Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute.
Then later that evening following the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards Function, Professor Sutton was surprised at his own awards event when it was announced he was to receive Rotary International’s highest honour – a Paul Harris Fellow for service to the community.
At the conclusion of the staff awards event, Wollongong Rotary President, Malcolm Heard, surprised the Vice-Chancellor with the prestigious award. Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary International.
Mr Heard told the large audience attending the staff awards evening that under the Vice-Chancellor’s stewardship UOW had attained international standing with an enviable record of achievement in teaching and research.
A stunned Vice-Chancellor said he had no idea he was to be honoured in such a way.
“Rotary is a great organisation – this (award) is just so special,” Professor Sutton said.
The Vice-Chancellor said the award reflected what others have achieved for the University.
He also pointed out that the award brought recognition of how close the University and the community are and the benefits that relationship brings.
