Federal Health Minister inspects Graduate School of Medicine
3 Jul 2008 | Bernie Goldie
Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon today (3 July) saw first hand how UOW’s Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) is training future doctors to work in Australia’s regional, rural and remote areas.
The minister took a guided tour of the GSM which included a demonstration of how a videoconference takes place with the GSM’s operations at the Shoalhaven Campus in Nowra.
During the demonstration, the GSM Dean, Professor Liz Farmer, pointed out that the University of Wollongong in fact won an international award for the online learning program it has developed for the GSM.
The minister was told that the “Online Learning Environment” won the prestigious 2008 Platinum Learning Impact Award. The annual Learning Impact Awards recognise outstanding applications of technology that address the most significant challenges facing the global education and training industries.
Ms Roxon specially asked to see the GSM as part of the visit she made to the Illawarra to outline the start of the process for the development of a Shellharbour super clinic.
The Shellharbour GP super clinic, one of 31 the Government promised in the lead up to the election, has been billed as a one-stop health shop to help solve the region’s GP shortage by making the area attractive to graduates. To be run as a private practice, bidders will apply to operate the clinic through a competitive process.
Among those taking part in the minister’s tour of the GSM were the Federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird; the Federal Member for Throsby, Jennie George; UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton; the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, Professor Don Iverson; and GSM Dean, Professor Liz Farmer.
