Senior East Timor figure presents 2008 Economic and Social Policy Lecture

A senior political figure from East Timor was the guest speaker at the 2008 Economic and Social Policy Lecture delivered at the University of Wollongong today (Tuesday 29 July).

Ms Fernanda Borges, President of the National Party, Chair to the Committee on Constitutional Issues, Justice, Government Legislation, Public Administration and Local Government in East Timor presented the lecture entitled, “Economic and Social Political Challenges for East Timor”.

Ms Borges, born in East Timor, was appointed Minister of Finance in 2001 by the Special Representative of the Secretary General, Dr Sergio Vieira de Mello for the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor.

Before her appointment as Finance Minister, Ms Borges was employed by the United Nations as Economic Adviser, Head of Finance, Budget and Economic Affairs and Special Assistant to the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General. Ms Borges also worked as a commercial banker in Sydney for 10 years.

Following her resignation as the Minister of Finance in April 2002, she assisted the Right Reverend Bishop of Dili as his Financial Adviser. In October 2005, she founded the Partido Unidade Nacional (PUN) in East Timor.

Fernanda Borges completed her secondary education and tertiary education in Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Economics and an MBA in Business Law and Public Sector Management from the University of Wollongong and the University of New England respectively.

In 2005, Fernanda Borges founded Partido Unidade Nacional and was elected President of the Party in January 2007 at the National Conference. She led PUN in the parliamentary elections and succeeded in winning three seats for the first time in Parliament.

MP Borges is now President of her Party Bench, Chair to Committee on Constitutional Issues, Justice, Government Legislation, Public Aministration and Local Government. She is also the National Parliament’s elected Member to the Superior Council of Defence and Security established constitutionally to advise the President of the Republic.

She is fluent in three languages -- Tetum, English and Portuguese. Ms Borges lives in Dili, East Timor.
