Workshop learns of latest advances in battery developments

8 Aug 2008 | Bernie Goldie

The international workshop on preparation and characterisation of battery cells was recently successfully hosted by the ARC Centre for Electromaterials Science.

It was supported by the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials, the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute, the Energy Futures Network and the University of Wollongong.

About 60 people, including overseas and interstate guests, attended this international workshop.

During the workshop, the recent advances in the lithium rechargeable batteries, magnesium batteries, lithium sulphur batteries, vanadium batteries, supercapacitors and solar cells were discussed.

Batteries, in particular rechargeable battery systems, are important for electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

In order to meet global requirements for clean emissions, workshop participants heard that there was a need to develop new materials and better technologies for hybrid and electric cars and it was necessary to enhance overall international collaboration in this field.

Invited participants and speakers at the workshop were: Professor Shu-Fen Hu (National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan); Professor Rui-Shi Liu (National Taiwan University); Dr Haoshen Zhou (Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan); Dr Jiazeng Sun (Monash University); Associate Professor Guoxiu Wang (University of Wollongong); Professor Yuping Wu (Fudan University, China); Dr Bjorn Winther-Jensen (Monash University); Dr Victor Luca (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation); Dr Yoshio Ukyo (Toyota Central R&D Labs., Inc., Japan); Dr Pat Howlett (Monash University); Professor Gordon Wallace (University of Wollongong); Professor Ki-Won Kim (Gyeongsang National University, Korea); Professor Hyo-Jun Ahn (Gyeongsang National University, Korea); Professor Hua Kun Liu (University of Wollongong); Professor Jung-Ho Ahn (Andong National University, Korea); Professor Shi Xue Dou (University of Wollongong); Professor Jun Chen (Nankai University, China); Dr Zaiping Guo (University of Wollongong); Professor Cheol Jin Kim (Gyeongsang National University, Korea); Professor Maria Skylas-Kazacos (University of New South Wales); Professor Yong Yang (Xiamen University, China); Dr Jiazhao Wang ((University of Wollongong); Dr. Caiyun Wang (University of Wollongong).
