Workshorts to feature at Wollongong Workshop Theatre
11 Aug 2008 | Bernie Goldie
Wollongong Workshop Theatre, which has close ties with UOW, continues its long tradition of supporting local writers with this year’s series of one act plays -- Workshorts 2008.
The theatre has been developing and supporting local writers’ work with Workshorts for more than 20 years.
This year features four writers with strong connections to UOW’s Creative Writing program.
“There are limited opportunities to have your work produced locally,” says writer Emma Doughty, “so it’s good to have this opportunity”.
The plays are diverse focusing on twisted humour:
Miss Emmie in The Woods (Emma Doughty) is a fractured take on the Red Riding Hood story
Candlelit Chaos (Jonanthan Lowe) is about an unhappy romantic dinner with a difficult waiter
A Time to Steal (Angela Williams) is about a thief with a sweet tooth
The Hedgehog (Lajos Hamers) introduces us to the unusual world of adult film actor Ron Jeremy
“Giving an opportunity to local writers is something Workshop is committed to,” president and playwright Lajos Hamers said.
“And strengthening our connection to the University’s Creative Arts Faculty is no bad thing either.”
Lajos said that with many workshop people involved professionally in the arts and performance industries, students get a chance to talk about future directions for their careers once their degrees are completed.
Emma Doughty is a 3rd year Creative Writing student and her play is directed by Bruce Polonis, a local actor and theatre raconteur.
Jonathan Lowe is a Creative Writing student and his play is being directed by Greg Tuchin, a local playwright and clinical skills technician at the University.
Angela Williams is in her final year of the combined Creative Arts and Media and Cultural Studies degree and she is directing her own play.
Lajos Hamers is president of Workshop Theatre, graduate of UOW and Tutor/Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at the University. His play is directed by Genevieve Tait, a 2nd year Creative Writing student.
Workshorts 2008 will be held from August 22 – September 6 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays (24 August and 31 August) at 4pm.
Cost for adults is $22; concession is $15. Sunday seniors and primary school students - $10
