HSC Economics Day attracts key speakers

The Sydney Morning Herald’s economics editor, an international expert in industrial relations and the author of a Year 11 and Year 12 economics textbook were among featured speakers at an HSC Economics Day held at the University of Wollongong.
Sub Dean from UOW’s Faculty of Commerce and the event’s organiser, Nadia Verrucci, said that about 80 HSC students from a range of schools attended.
The key speakers were:
Ross Gittins who has been Economics Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald since 1978. His journalistic experience includes editorial writing and stints in the parliamentary press galleries in Sydney and Canberra. He has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Newcastle
Associate Professor Braham Dabscheck who taught industrial relations at the University of New South Wales for 33 years until 2006 establishing himself as an international expert in the field
Tim Riley who is the Director of Tim Riley Publications Pty Ltd and the Economic Literacy Centre. He is the author of a Year 11 and 12 economics textbook and workbook series as well as the organiser of many professional development conferences in economics and business studies for teachers and students. He has a Master’s degree from Macquarie University and experience in teaching, writing and publishing the subject matter of economics for Australian schools and colleges
Maureen Davis who is the Human Society and Its Environment Co-ordinator at St Paul’s International College
The title of Ross Gittins’ talk was “The Australian Economy: Boom or Bust”; Braham Dabscheck’s address was on “Industrial Relations under the Rudd Labor Government: Establishing a New Safety Net”; Tim Riley spoke on “Monetary Policy – An Overview”; and Maureen Davis spoke on “How to Do Best on the Day of the Exam”.
