Why do people become terrorists?
19 Aug 2008 | Bernie Goldie
The Director of Research Programs at the Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention (CTCP) at the University of Wollongong, Dr Adam Dolnik, will present the next ‘Uni in the Brewery’ presentation on his research into terrorism studies.
His talk, entitled "What Do We Know about Why People Become Terrorists?" is open to the public and will be held at the Five Islands Brewery tomorrow (Wednesday 20 August).
Dr Dolnik has been investigating some of the most commonly raised questions of recent years. What drives people to join terrorist organisations? Psychological forces? Poverty? Religion? Foreign occupation? Is there a typical profile of a terrorist? How do the terrorists think?
His presentation will evaluate the successes and failures of the academic field of terrorism studies, specifically in relation to the issue of terrorist motivations.
The different explanations and approaches to answering the question of why people become terrorists will be examined, focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Some preliminary observations will be offered in the conclusion.
The talk will be held from 5.30-6.30pm. RSVP: to Vicky Wallace at vwallace@uow.edu.au
