Walk4Water event to assist the needy of Timor-Leste

29 Aug 2008 | Bernie Goldie

In the International Year of Sanitation, University of Wollongong students are taking action to increase the number of people who have access to basic levels of sanitation and clean water in Timor-Leste.

Students from the Black Opal Leadership Program, an initiative of UniCentre, are inviting the community to become involved and participate in the “Wideform Walk4Water” to be held on Sunday September 28 at Stuart Park.

“Wideform Walk4Water” aims to raise awareness of the 2.6 billion people who do not have access to safe water and sanitation facilities. The event hopes to combat the problem in our neighbouring countries by raising money for Water Aid’s projects in the Asia Pacific region, especially those in Timor-Leste.

The event will consist of a 2km family walk in the morning and a 5km afternoon walk with participants carrying buckets of water to simulate the struggles of millions worldwide in the simple collection of daily water.

Registrations for the family walk will be run from 9.30 until 10.30am, while participants in the 5km walk will be able to register from 12.30 until 1.30pm. A barbeque lunch will be served from noon and there will be family activities including face painting and other entertainment.

Participants are asked to fundraise beforehand, with a minimum target of $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and $25 for families if participants register before September 21.
