Portrayal of the Middle Ages on film and television

Australian postgraduates, whose research involves examining contemporary representations of the Middle Ages and Renaissance in recent films and television shows, are holding a symposium at the University of Wollongong over 1 and 2 October.

The two-day invitation-only symposium has been organised by Dr Louise D’Arcens from UOW’s English Literatures Program and is sponsored by the Australian Research Council Network for Early European Research – a body that has been committed to ensuring that medieval studies has a firm foothold in universities beyond the traditional ‘sandstone’ universities.

Dr D’Arcens currently holds an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant for the project, “Medievalism in Australian Cultural Memory”.

The symposium is being directed by expert speakers and facilitators in film studies, television studies and medieval studies.

Guest speakers include Professor Adrian Martin from Monash University and Associate Professor Chris Barker from Cultural Studies at UOW. Also facilitating the event is Professor Stephanie Trigg from the University of Melbourne.
