UOW offers high schools a good kick-start to physical education programs

The University of Wollongong’s School of Health Sciences has begun programs offering support to high schools in the delivery of the HSC’s Personal Development Health and Physical Education subject.
The program also aims to provide an interactive learning experience for Year 11 and 12 students.
UOW’s ‘Kick-Start Health and Physical Education’ programs currently comprise of ‘Kick-Start Anatomy and Physiology’ which provides access to the University’s Anatomy Laboratory. A special problem-based learning environment is offered where students explore themes surrounding musculoskeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular systems in the human body.
‘Kick-Start Anatomy and Physiology’ has been recently updated and running successfully for the past 12 months.
Schools who have already participated in the program have been impressed with the service on offer.
Mary Cooper from Albion Park High School said that “activities were hands-on, directly geared towards the Year 11 syllabus and that the presentation of material was extremely professional”.
UOW Lecturer in Sport and Exercise and PhD candidate, John Sampson, said that two further units have recently been developed.
‘Kick-Start Factors Affecting Performance’ firstly examines physiological responses in a laboratory environment with respect to the demand placed on the body’s energy systems.
“Secondly, a return visit to UOW exposes students to ‘Kick-Start Improving Performance’ allowing students to perform high performance field-based technology gathering sprint and anaerobic performance information from timing gates and specific testing protocols used by elite athletes,” Mr Sampson said.
