New flight school prepares for take off

20 Nov 2008 | Kate McIlwain

The International School of European Aviation (ISEA), a collaboration between Lund University School of Aviation in Sweden and the University of Wollongong, is preparing to launch the delivery of highly sought after European pilot training courses at two Australian campuses.

The ISEA course is a mix of theory and practical teaching – with students being in command of a cockpit just 10 weeks after their first flight. The course offered at ISEA is the JAR FCL ATPL (which stands for Joint Airworthiness Regulations, federal aviation regulations, airline transport pilot licence). This course allows students to meet the strict regulations of flying a commercial plane in Europe – where pilots are currently in high demand.

ISEA is a one of a kind operation, with the University of Wollongong being the only university in Australia to offer the JAR FCL ATPL qualification. The course will initially be offered at Bacchus Marsh in Victoria from February 2009, with a second facility in Port Macquarie New South Wales starting later in the year.

Students completing the JAR FCL ATPL course will complete a five phase training schedule which combines a total of 215 flight hours and nine theory subjects. The course is expected to take 18 months to complete. All ISEA’s flight instructors are accredited both by the Swedish Civil Aviation Authority and Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia.

Mats Nordgren will be training students, mainly from Europe, as the Chief Flight Instructor at ISEA’s Bacchus Marsh campus. The training will take place at the already established Tarago Valley School of Aviation, a registered training organisation.

Mr Nordgren says he is looking forward to teaching in Australia, as the good weather conditions mean that pilots can train all year round.

“This is an exciting new venture for us, after teaching and training in Sweden coming to Australia where we can fly all year round is an exciting concept,” he said.

“With preparation for the students running very smoothly we are ready and willing to be teaching our first intake of students in the New Year.”

Mr Nordgren has recently arrived in Australia from Sweden with his wife and daughter.

“We find Australians have this “no worries” attitude when it comes to helping a confused or lost Swede, and they are more than willing to lend you a hand in any way!” he said.

Enrolment for ISEA is open now, and induction and testing will be conducted at Lund University School of Aviation in Sweden during November and December. Students are expected to arrive in Australia to begin their course in early February 2009.
