Formal launch of ICT Research Institute
Industry and government representatives were among guests at the formal launch of the University of Wollongong’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Research Institute on Monday 24 November.
The event featured a keynote address by Telstra’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr Hugh Bradlow, titled “Innovation in the 21st century - it is no longer about bits and bytes”. Telstra also announced five scholarships to students within UOW’s Faculty of Informatics.
Other keynote speeches were given by the Director of Interactive Voice Technology, Dolby Australia, Dr Paul Boustead; and Dr Chris Ware of V.P. Engineering Audinate Pty Ltd.
The Institute conducts research in the fields of wireless communications, emerging networks, photonics, security, multimedia signal processing and content management, and interactive learning.
The new-look ICT Research Institute is one of the research strengths of the University of Wollongong and was formerly known as TITR (Telecommunications and Information Technology Research).
The Managing Director of the ICT Research Institute, Professor Farzad Safaei said the event was also an exhibition of a sample of the current projects and some of the most recent advances in ICT including:
- Automatic gender recognition system
- Illumination-invariant face detection
- Immersive multimedia communications
- Imprezzeo – find the right image fast
- Multimedia communications for virtual crowded spaces and for desert communities
Professor Safaei said the overall major event was an opportunity to celebrate many years of ICT research in TITR as well as launching the new image and name of the “ICT Research Institute”.
Among the guests were notable former TITR PhD students who now hold eminent positions in their respective fields.
CEO of Smart Services CRC, Warren Bradey said that the ICT research team has been an important contributor to his company over the last seven years.
“The research team at Wollongong continues to raise the bar through their involvement in the Smart Services CRC and through collaborating with partners of the calibre of Fairfax Digital and NSW Government.
“We anticipate the early adoption of ideas generated by the Wollongong team and congratulate them for their innovation,” he said.
