New free Wollongong city buses

3 Dec 2008 | Kate McIlwain

Minister for the Illawarra David Campbell today announced a new, free, high-frequency loop bus service for Wollongong city, to start operating early in 2009.

Mr Campbell said the Rees Government would fund the free CBD Shuttle, which will operate seven days a week on a 14.7 kilometre loop of the city.

“Public transport is one of the top priorities of the Rees Government, and this new CBD Shuttle will encourage Wollongong residents to make the switch to public transport,” Mr Campbell said.

“I expect residents will warmly embrace this new free service, and I’d encourage them to make the most of this investment in the region.

“Nine buses will be operating the CBD Shuttle on a daily basis, and the total loop will take 35 minutes, so it’s a fast way to get around town.

“This is a permanent service, it’s here to stay, so get ready to make the switch from car to coach.”

Mr Campbell said the CBD Shuttle would be an asset for the people of Wollongong, and connect with other public transport services.

“The CBD Shuttle loop will run from the University to the Hospital, Wollongong Station, CBD, the beach front, Innovation Campus, TAFE and back to the University,” Mr Campbell said.

“The new Wollongong CBD Shuttle will get students, workers and shoppers around the city quickly and efficiently, encouraging business and attracting tourists.

“It further increases Wollongong’s attractiveness as a great place to live, start a business or relocate the family.”

Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay today welcomed the new service.

“This is a multi-million dollar investment by the Rees Government in Wollongong transport, and the Wollongong economy,” Ms Hay said.

“I know this service will make daily travel around Wollongong easier and more convenient.”

The CBD Shuttle will run 7am to 10pm weekdays and 8am to 6pm on the weekends.

Weekday services will operate every 10 minutes in the morning and afternoon peaks, and every 20 minutes in the middle of the day and evenings.

Weekend services will operate every 30 minutes.
