Groundbreaking signals start of new multimedia and business training centre

Minister for the Illawarra, David Campbell yesterday turned the first sod for the fourth building on the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus, signalling the start of construction of a hi-tech digital multimedia and business training centre.

The $20 million building will accommodate the Wollongong Digital Media Centre – a joint initiative between UOW and TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute and will also be the new home of UOW’s Graduate School of Business (GSB).

Mr Campbell and Member for Wollongong, Ms Noreen Hay joined Deputy Vice-Chancellor Rob Castle, Dean of the Graduate School of Business Professor John Glynn and TAFE Illawarra Institute Director Dianne Murray to mark the beginning of construction.

The new building will provide a larger space with new facilities for the Graduate School of Business. Also, the Innovation Campus location will place the school close to business and industry partners that are an important part of its programs.

“The [Wollongong Digital Media] Centre will provide enhanced opportunities in the digital media field for students to undertake joint programs combining TAFE and university study,” Mr Campbell.

The [multimedia] course will be jointly offered by UOW’s Faculty of Creative Arts and the Illawarra Institute and will offer four separate awards: Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor degree.

“The Centre’s facilities will include a film and television studio, animation room and computer labs, a specialised recording and sound stage area and editing suites,” Ms Hay said.

Mr Campbell said the NSW government had committed $4.8 million to the new facility and was very pleased to be part of the exciting partnership between the regions two big higher education institutions.

“The building is the fourth of a planned 25 buildings for the Innovation Campus,” he said.

“Construction will take place over the next 12 months with the building scheduled for completion in late 2009.”
