High achieving HSC students from the Illawarra and surrounding areas were recognised at UOW’s Vice-Chancellor’s morning tea today (Wednesday 7 January).
Acting Vice-Chancellor John Patterson hosted the special morning tea for students who achieved one of the top 100 UAIs in the University’s local regions.
Around 150 guests, including students and their parents, attended the morning tea to mark their outstanding academic achievements in the 2008 HSC.
In his address, Professor Patterson told the students that they should be extremely proud of their achievements.
“Australia often celebrates swimmers who spend hours in the pool, or cricketers who get ducks – but we sometimes forget to celebrate academic achievement,” he said.
“[The University] regards this as a celebration of the success of your achievements.”
Professor Patterson also spoke about the $3000 Vice-Chancellor’s scholarships offered to students in the top 100.
The cohort included students from the Illawarra, Sutherland, South Western Sydney, Southern Highlands and the South Coast, and students’ UAIs ranged from 96 to 99.65.
David Monti, from St John Bosco College in Sutherland achieved the highest UAI in the group. He said he had his sights set on studying Commerce and was still deciding on which University to attend.
However, school friends Daniel Ward, Scott Dowling, Amy Campbell and Robyn Morris, from Heathcote High School said they were excited to come to UOW to study four very different degrees in Arts/Law, Civil Engineering, Commerce/Law and Maths Education.
Deans and Sub Deans from the Faculties attended the morning tea to advise on the different offerings available to the students.
