UOW hosts national maths summer school

The University of Wollongong will be hosting the Australian Mathematics Sciences Institute (AMSI) Summer School from January 12 to Febraury 6.

Honours and Masters students from universities around Australia will be visiting UOW to study courses in pure mathematics and applied mathematics and statistics.

During Summer School, students can access a range of courses in the mathematical sciences, some which aren’t available at their home institutions.

“This is a nationwide initiative to support maths and statistics because there is a shortage of skills,” conference director Associate Professor Jacqui Ramagge said.

“Universities are combining their efforts through AMSI to support each other and work together.”

AMSI is a national cooperative of universities and institutions as well as the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the CSIRO and the Australian Maths Trust.

The Summer School was established in 2002 and has previously been held at the Universities of Melbourne, News South Wales and Sydney, as well as ANU, RMIT and Monash.

This is the first time a regional university has hosted the Summer School

“Four out of the six courses offered at the School are being taught by UOW staff, which is a statement of quality and talent at UOW,” Associate Professor Ramagge said.

The month long course in intensive, with students having lectures to attend everyday.

Participants will be staying together in UOW student accommodation Weerona College, so there is also a social side to the conference with students having the chance to meet fellow mathematicians from around the country.

“We have 70 students attending from every state, and even a couple of international students who are here on exchange,” Associate Professor Ramagge said.
