Long-term Heads of Chemistry honoured
The last three long-term Heads of Chemistry at UOW were recently honoured at a special ceremony.
The ceremony took the form of unveiling pictures of the three following an introduction by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton. Those honoured at the ceremony were Professor Leon Kane-Maguire, Professor John Bremner and Professor Will Price.
The current CEO of the Australian Research Council, Professor Margaret Sheil, gave an entertaining summary of the academics’ strengths as heads over the past 30 years.
It’s an area close to Professor Sheil’s heart as she joined UOW as a Lecturer in the then Department of Chemistry in 1990. She became a Professor of Chemistry in 2000 – a first for a female academic in Australia.
The photos of the heads will be hung in the Chemistry office.
As part of the proceedings, everyone was asked to dress in a style similar to one of the three photos which meant either academic dress, a tie, or in a flying suit (hence Professor Kane-Maguire’s choice of attire).
While Professor Kane-Maguire’s world of chemistry routinely consists of such academic pursuits as polymers and nanotechnology few around campus are aware of his other passion as an aviation war historian buff.
His colleagues once gave him a surprise birthday gift with a flight in a rare World War II P-51 Mustang.
