Diversity: the week in pictures.
UOW’s annual Diversity Week has seen many colourful events and activities taking place across campus all week.
On Monday the week was launched by Human Rights and Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Mr Graeme Innes who said that the diversity message of ‘responsibilities, rights and respect’ should be as natural to Australians as the idea of Slip, Slop, Slap.
The opening began with a traditional Wadi Wadi welcome to country by Aunty Barbara Nicholson and an introduction from Vice-Chancellor Professor Gerard Sutton.
“What a world it would be if we were all the same,” Professor Sutton said. “It would be hopeless – so we’re here to celebrate diversity.”
Some of the celebrations throughout the week included:
- An exhibition of art from artists who are part of the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care.
- Law/Arts debate. Which is the smartest faculty?
- Gender and Diversity Luncheon.
- BINGAY - hosted by the multi DIVA award winning drag queen, Mitzi Macintosh accompanied by barrel girl, Naomi Palmer.
- Blind cricket battled out between uni students vs staff members and a barbecue to raise money for the Blind Cricket Association.
- Multicultural festival on the McKinnon Lawn – including an international barbecue sharing the experience of different foods from a variety of cultures, the Baha’i Society’s Uni-Tea for Unity and many more groups from around campus.
- Indigenous arts, basket weaving and BBQ to raise money for the indigenous games.
