Students showcase their legal skills

Students from Smiths Hill and Wollongong High Schools had the chance to showcase their legal mooting skills at the University of Wollongong on April 23.

The UOW Law Students’ Society in conjunction with the Faculty of Law conducted a legal skills day for the students.

The UOW Law Students’ Society held a demonstration moot for the students where the students sat in on a simulated court scene.

The demonstration was followed by a legal workshop held by the Faculty of Law where law students helped the mooting teams from Smiths Hill and Wollongong High Schools develop their practical legal skills.

“This was a great opportunity for high school students to come and see a simulated court scene, as well as providing university students with the opportunity to put the skills they learn in the classroom into action,” President of the Law Students’ Society, Martin Rowney, said.

“‘Mooting is where two teams, the appellant and the respondent, compete against each other in a court-like situation appealing on a point of law before a panel of judges.

“Developing partnerships with local schools is important to us. It makes the transition to university for school students that much easier, having faces they know and getting a feel for university life,” Mr Rowney said.
