UOW institute scores second successive ECS Summer Fellowship Award
A PhD student from UOW’s Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM), Shulei Chou, has been awarded a highly-competitive ECS (Electrochemical Society) summer fellowship to study at Canada’s Dalhousie University.
He was recommended jointly for the US$5,000 award by his supervisors, Professor Hua Kun Liu, Professor Shi Xue Dou and Dr Jia Zhao Wang along with his summer fellowship host, Professor Jeff Dahn from Dalhousie University.
ECS is a very large society covering many disciplines in chemistry, materials, engineering and solid state science. ECS has a world-wide membership of many thousands, including most universities in North America, many from Asia, Europe, South America and Australia.
Each year the ECS awards only the top five candidates with Shulei chosen as one of these. Last year, ISEM’s former PhD student Sau Yen Chew (supervisors: Professor Hua Kun Liu and Dr Jia Zhao Wang) won this award hosted by Professor P. Novak at PSI Switzerland.
“Two consecutive ECS fellowships have now been won by PhD students from ISEM which is a great success and we are very proud of their achievements,” ISEM Director, Professor Shi Xue Dou said.
Shulei's program is under the auspices of the ARC Centre of Excellence on Nano-Electromaterials.
Professor Dou said that Shulei’s excellent PhD program focused on the development of electrode materials for lithium ion batteries.
“He has published 12 papers with seven as first author in the past two years and all these have been in international journals ranked by the ARC as A and A* journals.
“Shulei has also made a special contribution to the maintenance of laboratory operations and helped other postgraduate students,” Professor Dou said.
In addition, Shulei has been President of the Chinese Student Association which lately has been actively involved in donating more than $20,000 to send to assist victims of the Wenchuang earth quake.
Shulei will join Professor Dahn at Dalhousie University for his summer fellowship from June.
