Sydney Alumni take part in Speed Networking event

Around 60 Sydney alumni attended a ‘speed networking event’ hosted by the Office of Community and Partnerships at the Aurora Bar last week.

The event saw participants take part in a series of two minute one-on-one networking sessions, each covering a different business related topic, including “how is the economic crisis impacting on your business” or “what did you want to be when you grew up”.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Rob Castle welcomed alumni to the event and said that the strong UOW Alumni Network plays an important role in UOW’s success.

“A university depends on two things – staff and students, he said. “Students become graduates, and it’s on the back of the success of these graduates at getting jobs that we have built our reputation.”

Alumni representing all nine faculties attended the evening, with many of them saying it was great to have a chance to speak to people from so many different backgrounds.

“It’s been a good opportunity to meet a lot of different people, and network in business terms with the common theme that we have all been to UOW,” town planner and Biomedical Science graduate Todd Robinson said.

“I’ve met a few Wollongong graduates during my work and I get the impression from talking to people that UOW has a fantastic reputation,” he said.

Commerce graduate Maya Rashed said she was interested to meet people who went to UOW and who now have an educated opinion on the economic world.

Civil engineer Alexandra Jenkins and auditor Michael Smith met at collage at UOW and attended the event together.

“There are so many different people here tonight, I haven’t met one person who has done the same thing,” Michael said.
