UOW Cares to celebrate second year of success
The executive director of Oxfam Australia, Mr Andrew Hewett, will help staff on campus to celebrate the second anniversary of UOW Cares tomorrow (June 10).
Started in June 2007, the staff giving program has raised more than $60,000 towards 10 different causes including Oxfam Australia.
UOW staff are invited to attend the celebration tomorrow to hear Mr Hewett speak and take part in an expo and lunch. Mr Hewett will talk about the work that Oxfam does in enabling less fortunate members of local and international communities to control their own development, achieve equitable treatment, exercise their basic rights, and ensure the environment is healthy and sustainable.
Mr Hewett became Executive Director of Oxfam Australia in October 2001 and has established the agency’s advocacy program and helped to put the focus on lobbying governments, public education and campaigning on social justice and development issues.
Recently, UOW Cares was recognised as “an admirable and novel initiative which seems appropriate to the work and ethos of the University”, when it won the Outreach and Community Relations category in the 2008 Association of Commonwealth Universities PR, Marketing and Communications Awards.
The charities and causes in the UOW Cares program are:
- The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program
- NSW Cancer Council
- The Fred Hollows Foundation
- The South Coast School for Children with Autism
- Australian Conservation Foundation
- Oxfam Australia
- Indigo Foundation
- RSPCA
- UOW Equity Fund
- Parameadows School
Also, programs like the ‘Coffee for a Cause’ week – where coffee outlets across campus donated 50 cents for every cup of coffee sold – have also helped to raise money for the different causes.
