Informatics opens its doors to UniConnections equity event

The Faculty of Informatics recently hosted a group of 35 Year 10 and 11 students from five disadvantaged high schools.

Organised through UOW’s UniConnections equity program, the event was intended to expose the students to the potential of continuing into tertiary studies and elevate their career aims.

The group attended two workshops – ‘computer hacking’ presented by Daniel Saffioti and ‘robotics’ presented by Koren Ward (assisted by higher degree research students Sherine and Patricia).

The school students were also escorted on a campus tour by three UniAdvice student representatives.

During a faculty morning tea break, three Informatics students joined the group and spoke about their experiences moving from high school into university study.

Senior staff with Informatics also provided welcoming addresses to the school groups and there was also input from the Woolyungah Indigenous Centre and Student Services.

Judging by feedback from the students, the day was a big success with both workshops scoring high marks from all students.
