Indigenous welcome for visiting Hong Kong students
The University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Education recently won a tender to host 18 students from The Hong Kong Institute of Education.
They are currently undertaking a six-week Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) English Language Immersion Program.
The Early Childhood Program offers the Hong Kong students an opportunity to experience a mix of academic sessions supported by a variety of excursions and hands-on activities including an activity today (19 June) at the Short Street Occasional Child Care Centre in Corrimal.
The centre planted a traditional bush tucker garden which has involved the local community, the staff and children of the centre.
In recognition of this, today’s event included a local aboriginal community leader performing a Welcome to Country, a traditional smoking ceremony and a performance on the didgeridoo.
Project Manager for UOW’s Early Years Program, Judy Daunt, said the activity was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the University’s partnership with local community services and the valuable Hong Kong programs UOW offers.
Among other participants attending the Early Years Program event today were the Minister for Illawarra and Member for Keira, Mr David Campbell; Mr Roy Kennedy from the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council along with UOW Faculty of Education staff and Wollongong City Council representatives.
