Acclaim for paper focused on falls among older people

A paper focused on toe weakness and deformity and their links with falls among the elderly has received international acclaim.

School of Health Sciences PhD student, Karen Mickle, from the Biomechanics Research Laboratory was selected by an international jury as the winner of the Clinical Biomechanics Award for her paper entitled, “Are Toe Weakness and Deformity Associated with Falls in Older People”.

The paper was co-authored by her supervisors from the School of Health Sciences, Dr Bridget Munro and Professor Julie Steele as well as her external supervisors, Associate Professor Hylton Menz and Professor Stephen Lord.

The highly sought after award is only presented once every two years and is an open category.

As part of her prize, Karen will present a plenary session at the XXII Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 5-9 July.

Her full manuscript will also be published as the International Society of Biomechanics Clinical Biomechanics Award paper in the international journal, Clinical Biomechanics.

One of her supervisors, Professor Julie Steele, said it was an outstanding achievement for a PhD student.
