UOW team limbers up for City to Surf ‘09
A 400-strong team from the University of Wollongong is again expected to participate in this year’s City to Surf being held on Sunday August 9.
For the past 13 years students, staff and relatives have boarded eight buses to Sydney to participate in the 14 kilometres run from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach.
UOW has had major successes over the years as part of the “tertiary category” in the event but this year, for the first time, participants will run as a “corporate mixed group”.
Anyone wishing to seek further information or sign up should visit www.uow.edu.au/conferences/city2surf09/index.html as there are still some team vacancies.
The team’s long-time co-ordinator, Honorary Principal Fellow in the Faculty of Engineering, Associate Professor John Montagner, said the University regarded the event as a great community engagement activity.
He said the University has assisted by providing transport to and from the event, team T-shirts and some food. This year’s sponsors are UOW, UniCentre, University Recreation and Aquatic Centre (URAC) and the UOW Social Club.
Some participants have worked on their fitness levels with help from URAC’s health and fitness team. URAC has been offering an eight-week training squad or a personalised program.
All City to Surf participants receive five free visits to the URAC Health Club, group exercise classes or pool by simply presenting their receipt of entry to the UOW City to Surf team at URAC reception. This promotion ends 30 September 2009.
In the past, the UOW team has seen a vast spread of abilities from those who finish the event in under 60 minutes to others who do it in three hours.
