New commerce degree wins acclaim in China

The Faculty of Commerce’s new undergraduate degree has won widespread acclaim from a number of leading Chinese business faculties for its focus on socially innovative commerce.

UOW academics were in China last week to exchange collaborative agreements and hold discussions with leading Chinese business faculties at universities in Guangzhou, Wuhan and Nanjing.

During these talks Faculty of Commerce staff presented details of the new degree, which focuses on socially innovative commerce and is due to be officially launched at the Innovation Campus on Wednesday (July 15).

Commenting on the reaction of the Chinese business faculties, Dean of Commerce Professor Shirley Leitch said this was further evidence that the Faculty’s new degree was at the leading edge of undergraduate business education.

As a result of the discussions in China, a series of twinning agreements are expected to be finalised in coming months which will see top Chinese students studying the new Bachelor of Commerce as part of dual degree arrangements with their home universities.

In Guangzhou a Memorandum of Understanding with the School of Business at Sun Yat-sen University was signed. Associate Dean Professor Feng Liu noted the similarity between UOW’s focus on socially innovative commerce and Sun Yat-sen’s teaching and research focus on “pursuing wealth with integrity”.

Professor Liu and other staff at Sun Yat-sen University were impressed with the new program and the UOW’s outstanding teaching record. Further discussions look at the potential for staff exchange where Sun Yat-sen academics could be teaching the UOW Commerce degree.
