Staff and students celebrate new socially innovative Commerce degree

Staff and students in the Faculty of Commerce last week got a first look at the new Australian-first Commerce degree that focuses on socially innovative commerce.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Rob Castle officially launched the new degree, which promises to produce future business leaders with a strong commitment to social and economic well-being.

Wollongong is the only commerce or business school in Australia to have an undergraduate degree focused on socially innovative commerce and Commerce student Shibani Iyer said she thought the new degree would make UOW students stand out.

“In completing this degree, new students will receive a differentiated degree that will put them ahead of the curve not simply in the job market, but as global citizens,” she said.

The degree will provide a strong grounding in the traditional business areas like marketing, management, accounting, finance and economics, but will also include core subjects that frame the whole degree as ‘socially innovative’.

Internships and simulation subjects will give students real examples of what it’s like to work in socially minded organisations.

Dean of Commerce, Professor Shirley Leitch said the change to the degree is significant for business education.

“Socially innovative commerce means the creation of both wealth and wellbeing through sound governance, corporate social responsibility, ethical decision making, and environmental sustainability.

“Socially innovative commerce is an attitude of respect and responsibility towards people and the planet. This attitude generates actions that create both wealth and wellbeing”

”Students are the future leaders of this beautiful planet and we are here to equip them for that journey” Professor Leitch said.

The new Bachelor of Commerce will start in 2010.
