First joint UOW and CSIRO workshop on superconductors

The first joint University of Wollongong/CSIRO workshop on superconducting materials and devices was held at the Innovation Campus on August 26.

The Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) at UOW and the CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering are world leading groups in the field of superconducting materials and devices.

The race to perfect superconductivity materials is one of science’s great missions. Superconductors are materials that have no resistance to the flow of electricity below certain temperatures.

Finding materials that do not produce losses in energy has massive implications for industry and technology in general. Electrical current could flow forever within a closed loop of superconducting material.

In recent years, ISEM and CSIRO have been expanding their research fields to other hot topics such as nano-magnetism, nano-electronics and novel multifunctional electronic materials and their applications.

ISEM has been relocated to the Innovation Campus and both institutions have been equipped with more state-of-the-art infrastructures to focus on both breakthrough science and applications.

Participants at the first joint workshop discussed the latest developments with new superconductors and their potential applications.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Judy Raper, and the Dean of Engineering, Professor Chris Cook were on hand to meet workshop participants.
