The week in pictures: celebrating International Week

International Week has seen UOW’s diversity on display, with a number of different events celebrating the contributions that International students make to the University.

Some of the events held during the week included, a performance and food night, cultural dress day, international bake sale and Global Highway, where stalls were held around the UOW campus representing all of the cultures in University accommodation.

This year's International Week also included the first time participation of students from the Kingdom of Bhutan. Bhutan is the world's youngest democracy and is located at the Eastern end of the Himalayan mountains, bordered by India and China.

Around 20 students from Bhutan are studying Bachelor degrees at UOW under a scholarship program of the Bhutan Government's Department of Adult and Higher Education. After their graduation from UOW, the students will return home to take teacher training and will work as teachers in the nation's schools.

Although Bhutan was for many years somewhat isolated by its geography, cut off from the world by the Himalayas, there is increasing interest in this small nation, it's unique culture and its national philosophy of "Gross National Happiness".

Wollongong was fortunate to experience Bhutanese culture first hand during I-Week through both a dance performance by the students at the Cultural performance night and a display of Bhutanese culture in Global Highway.

The week was coordinated by UniCentre’s Centre for Student Engagement and Accommodation Services, and supported by a working party of UOW staff from various faculties & units. Illawarra Committee for International Students was responsible for organising the cultural performance evening held on Monday.
