Living, Working, and Playing on the Land
A survey aimed at understanding the issues important to rural landholders in the Kiama Local Government Area is now being distributed.
The survey, entitled “Living, Working, and Playing on the Land” has been undertaken by UOW’s GeoQuEST Research Centre, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Dr Nick Gill said the rural Illawarra was being transformed.
“New landowners, pressures on agriculture, the needs of farming families, and environmental issues present both opportunities and challenges,” he said.
But with increasing diversity of landowners, with sometimes varying visions of rural life, what is the best way forward?
Dr Gill said the survey would examine such questions as what motivates landowners to live on and use rural land? How are their activities shaping current and future livelihoods and environments? How should citizens of the region make the most informed decisions about what they want from government and from each other?
Dr Gill said people’s participation in the study would communicate what matters to them and how they wanted to live and work in the Kiama Local Government Area.
