A helping hand for HSC economics students

Local HSC students had an opportunity today (Friday 4 September) to gain valuable tips from Australian leading economic commentator, Ross Gittens, at the University of Wollongong HSC Economics Studies Day.

More than 100 students learnt about current economic changes and how to use this knowledge to improve their economics exam results. Ross Gittens (Economics Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald) shared his wisdom with the students about ‘Australia in Recession’.

Hosted annually by UOW’s Faculty of Commerce, this year’s HSC Economics Day featured not only Gittens but also Tim Riley (Director of Tim Riley Publications Pty Ltd and the Economic Literacy Centre); Associate Professor Braham Dabscheck (Senior Fellow, Faculty of Law, University of Melbourne), and Bronwyn Hession (Senior Education Officer, Office of the Director Catholic Schools Office, previously Supervisor of HSC Economics Marking).

“In the wake of the global financial crisis, economics has become much more prominent in the minds of young people,’ Dean of Commerce. Professor Shirley Leitch said.

“Our annual HSC Economics Studies provides high school students in this region access to leading experts and will hopefully inspire them to continue studying this very important subject at university. I congratulate our School of Economics on providing such a worthwhile learning experience for students from the Illawarra.”

The students learnt about how to do their best on the day of the exam; effective exam techniques; monetary policy; Australia in recession; and, industrial relations under the Rudd Labor Government.
