UOW academic participates in conference on prisons, human rights, mental health and privatisation

An academic from the School of Accounting and Finance will be one of the participants at a conference being held in Sydney tomorrow (Saturday 5 September) focused on “Our Prisons – Human Rights, Mental Health and Privatisation”.

Dr Jane Andrew will speak about the privatisation of prison services as part of a series of conferences that aims to explore the reform of the NSW correctional system.

The conference is organised by the Community Justice Coalition and International Commission of Jurists, a broad based independent coalition of individuals and organisations, whose purpose is to work towards the reform of the NSW Criminal Justice System. The conference will be held at the State Library of NSW.

The series will canvas issues such as restorative justice, rehabilitation and mental health, prisoner literacy and rights, juvenile justice and international standards.

Among those speaking at the conference will be the Minister for Corrective Services Mr John Robertson, judges, lawyers and human rights activists from Australia and overseas.

Dr Andrew is co-author of the recently launched book in the United Kingdom entitled In Government We Trust: Market Failure and the Delusions of Privatisation.

In Government We Trust, the authors examined the promises and the often highly damaging consequences of the privatisation of core public services, such as transport infrastructure and public utilities, in major liberal democratic states which has occurred over the past three decades.
