Time for an extra coffee break?

UOW’s second annual Coffee for a Cause is on this week, and hopes to get staff and students indulging in a few extra coffees to help support student scholarships and the environment.

To participate, all people have to do is buy a cup of coffee from Sixty Seven Dining, Out for Lunch, Picasso, Panizzi or Pool Unique, which will then donate 50 cents from each cup towards student equity scholarships.

Last year the campaign raised close to $2000.

Anyone who buys five coffees during the week and has their UOW Cares coffee card (available at the above coffee outlets) stamped can hand in their card to receive a free travel mug from the Environmental Sustainability Initiatives Unit – which will help reduce UOW’s consumption of coffee cups.

According to the ESI Unit, the UOW population drinks more than 3000 cups of coffee each week, meaning disposable coffee cups are a big environmental issue.

Coffee for a Cause is part of the UOW Cares workplace giving committee, which has raised over $80 000 for a range of not-for-profit organisations and internal funds.

Coffee for a Cause supports the Equity Fund, which supports students who might not otherwise have the chance to attend University and provides support for students experiencing financial difficulties during their studies. Contributions help the University to increase the number of 'Equity and Merit' scholarships and to help improve support.

In addition to Coffee Week, staff who sign-up to UOW Cares by the end of September and go in the draw to receive a Saeco coffee machine from Harvey Norman Warrawong valued at $1100 or one of three vouchers valued at $30 to Piato Coffee and Fine Food.
